Topic 1:
Maria Montessori and the Montessori Method
Who was Maria Montessori and what is this method that she created over a hundred years ago that still holds true today? This topic session will focus on Dr. Montessori’s life and the basic elements that she created after years of observation and study of young children. This workshop is designed to provide an overview and basic understanding of Montessori and her method for those who are new to Montessori and need a general overview.
Topic 2:
The Universal Tendencies, Planes and Development and Sensitive Periods
Maria Montessori developed three key principles that have become the foundation of Montessori Philosophy. This topic session visits Montessori’s concepts of the Universal Tendencies, Planes of Development and Sensitive Periods. These key concepts help us to understand the characteristics of children and the developmental stages. Montessori’s developmental theories are fascinating and this topic presentation will give those new to Montessori information that they need to understand the children that they are working with in the classroom each day.
Topic 3:
The Montessori Triangle: How the Teacher, the Prepared Environment and the Child work Together in the Montessori Environment
Understanding the relationship between the child, the environment and the adult is essential to understanding how a Montessori classroom works. Watch the following workshop in the series to see why each aspect is relevant and how all are influenced by one another.
Topic 4:
The Role of the Adult
The Adult has an important role in the Montessori environment. This topic will help you to gain insight into the role of the adult and the specific responsibilities of the assistant within the classroom. Find out how to support the children, the environment and the other adults within the classroom.
Topic 5:
Classroom Management: A Survival Guide
Being an assistant in a Montessori classroom can be challenging. Often times you are given the responsibility for classroom management while the teacher is working with individual children. This workshop topic will focus on the expectations within a Montessori environment. It will also provide basic strategies for behavior management within a Montessori environment. This workshop is most valuable for those who are new to the Montessori environment.
Topic 6:
Working as a Team – Know what questions to ask and how to ask them!
As you explore and adapt to your role as an Assistant in a Montessori classroom, it can be difficult to navigate the environment. You don’t always know what to do or which questions to ask! This session will focus on building a positive and effective relationship with the other adults in the classroom. Join us to learn about communication strategies with adults in the classroom, effectively organizing the daily routines and participating in an positive working environment.
