The Montessori Philosophy was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori,
Italy's first woman physician. Through observation in her own
work with children, Dr. Montessori discovered the processes
critical in the young child's learning: order, language,
refinement of movement, and attention to detail.
Through this work, Dr.
Montessori designed the "prepared environment" to stimulate
interest as well as to perfect the senses and physical being.
It was within this framework that she gave children the freedom
to choose that which satisfies their own present needs.
The child's "absorbent mind" is then free to soak up both the
physical and emotional environment.
Dr. Montessori
encouraged us as both "guides to life" (teachers) and as parents
to "follow the child", allowing each child to strive within
himself to fulfill his potential and "construct the individual."
